#1: The Confluence from 20 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

30-Jul-2018 -- This is the 3rd out of 6 reports reaching confluence points in Iceland during a one-week bicycle trip. The story starts at 64°N 22°W and continues from 64°N 21°W.

This was the day with the hardest cycling against head wind that I ever experienced in my life. This is quite meaningful considering that I have cycled about 0.3 Gm (Giga-Meters) since I learned cycling.

I didn’t make the mistake to get angry about the wind. Instead I used it as a good opportunity for meditation while cycling with 9 km/h against the storm. With this practice of patience, I found myself 450 m from the confluence point in the afternoon. This is surely one of the easiest visits possible on Iceland: A fence with a little ladder can be easily climbed. On the other side of the fence, a track leads directly to the confluence over an open meadow.

The confluence is located on this huge meadow with short grass and various flowers. There is a great view on the famous Hekla Volcano in the vicinity. In 1 km distance, the Hekla Museum can be visited.

CP Visit Details:

  • Distance of bicycle parking: 450 m

  • Time to walk to the CP: 5 min

  • Time at the CP: 2:29 PM

  • Measured height: 117 m

  • Minimal distance according to GPS: 0 m

  • Position accuracy: 3 m

  • Topography: almost flat

  • Vegetation: grass, white flowers.

  • Weather: cloudy, 14° C (felt temperature)

  • Given Name: The Hekla Meadow Confluence

The story continues at 64°N 19°W.
