Gullfoss er ein foss sørvest på Island der elva Hvítá renn ut i ein ravine.


Gullfoss er ein av dei mest populære turistattraksjonane i landet. Den vide elva Hvítá renn sørover og svingar skarpt til venstre og utfor tre bratte «trappetrinn» før ho rasar utfor to fall (11 m og 21 m) ned i ei 32 meter djupt kløft. Kløfta er om lag 20 meter brei og 2,5 km lang. Middelvassføringa gjennom fossen er 100 – 180 m³/s om sommaren, då snø- og issmeltinga er stor, og 50 – 110 m³/s om vinteren. Den høgaste vassføringa som er målt her var på 2000 m³/s.

Når ein nærmar seg fossen kan ein ikkje sjå kløfta slik at det ser ut til at elva berre forsvinn ned i bakken.


Fleire gonger dei siste hundre åra har det vore spekulert i om ein skal nytte Gullfoss til kraftproduksjon. Fossen vart indirekte leigd bort til utanlandske investorar av eigarane Tómas Tómasson og Halldór Halldórsson. Investorane hadde derimot ikkje nok pengar og klarte ikkje å få utført planane. Fossen vart seinare seld til staten, men sjølv etter han vart seld var det planar om å utnytta fossen til vasskraft, noko som ville ha endra fossen for alltid. Dette vart derimot ikkje gjort og i dag er fossen verna.


Sigríður Tómasdóttir, dottera til Tómas Tómasson, var fast bestemt på å redde fossen frå å verte utbygd og truga med å kaste seg sjølv utfor fossen. Ein svært populær soge er at Sigríður redda fossen, men dette er ikkje sant. Ein minnestein for Sigriður, ovanfor fossen, viser ho i profil.
