Elektrotehnika on teaduse ja tehnika haru. Teadusharuna käsitleb elektrotehnika elektri ja magnetismi nähtuste teoreetilisi aluseid. Elektrotehnika kui tehnikaharu tegeleb nende nähtuste rakendamisega. Elektrotehnika rakendusliku osa põhiliigid on tugevvoolutehnika ja nõrkvoolutehnika.





Seosed elektrotehnika põhisuuruste vahel (alalisvoolu korral)
I ‒ vool (amprites), E ‒ pinge (voltides),
P ‒ võimsus (vattides), R ‒ takistus (oomides).


Tugevvoolutehnika (nagu ka sellega suures osas kattuv elektroenergeetika) tegeleb elektrienergia tootmise, muundamise, jaotamise ja tarbimise tehniliste vahenditega (elektrienergia allikad, elektrimasinad ja -aparaadid, elektrijaamad ja -võrgud, elektriajamid, elektervedu, elektervalgustus jm).


Nõrkvoolutehnika hõlmas 20. sajandi algupoolel peamiselt side- ja raadiotehnikat. Valdkondadena järgnesid elektroautomaatika, elektrimõõtetehnika, infotehnoloogia, andmetöötlus ja andmeedastus. Nõrkvoolutehnika tugineb riistvaraliselt elektroonika rakendustele ja tarkvaraliselt digitaalsignaalide kasutamisele.
