Chicago geto (mai 1974)


Geto on rassilise kuuluvuse, usundi, sotsiaalse päritolu, majandusliku või õigusliku seisundi vm alusel diskrimineeritud elanike linnaosa.


Sõna pärineb 16. sajandi algusest ja algselt nimetati nii Veneetsia Cannaregio linnaosas ala, kus olid sunnitud elama juudid. Sõna päritolu ei ole selge. Oletatakse, et see on tulnud itaaliakeelsest väljendist geto nuovo ('uus valukoda') või sõnast borghetto ('linnake'). Võimalik on aga ka, et sõnal on heebrea päritolu: heebreakeelne sõna get tähendab 'eraldatust'.[1] Sõna tuli laialdaselt kasutusele Teise maailmasõja ajal, mil seda kasutati Saksamaa loodud vähemusrahvuste linnaosade kohta.


Tänapäeval nimetatakse getodeks igasuguseid vaeste linnaosasid.
