Lorentzi jõuks nimetatakse elektromagnetväljas liikuvale elektrilaengule mõjuvat jõudu.


Liikuvale osakesele mõjub nii elektriväljast põhjustatud jõud qEdisplaystyle qmathbf E kui ka magnetväljast põhjustatud jõud qv×Bdisplaystyle qmathbf v times mathbf B . Kogu osakesele mõjuv jõud on seega:


F=q(E+v×B),displaystyle mathbf F =q(mathbf E +mathbf v times mathbf B ),

kus



Fdisplaystyle mathbf F on osakesele mõjuv jõud (njuutonites N),


Edisplaystyle mathbf E on elektrivälja tugevus (voltides meetri kohta V/m),


Bdisplaystyle mathbf B on magnetiline induktsioon (teslades T),


qdisplaystyle q! on osakese laeng (kulonites C),


vdisplaystyle mathbf v on osakese kiirus (meetrites sekundis m/s).

Kui osake liigub magnetväljas (st E = 0), saab Lorentzi jõu suunda määrata vasaku käe reegli abil.


Lorentzi jõud on nimetuse saanud Hollandi füüsiku Hendrik Lorentzi järgi.
